Malva (Mallow) & Kosteletzkya (Sea Mallow)

Mallows and Sea Mallows are annuals to short lived perennials and have nice, hand-shaped, maple tree-like leaves on erect stalks and numerous bright colored flowers in pink to bluish-red shades throughout the summer. Easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in an open position. The extremely rare Sea Mallow (Kosteletzkya pentacarpos) is not reliably winter hardy in Central Europe and should be grown in pots under frostfree conditions throughout the year with a winter minimum of some 5°C in full sun and reduced watering.
Sow flat in any well drained soil. Keep pots of winter hardy Malva species in a protected spot outside. Carefully transplant after third pair of real leaves appears.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6, unless not noted differently.

30 (50)cm, Sea Mallow is an extremely rare perennial from slightly wet soils in coastal areas in the Mediterranean region extending eastwards to Azerbaijan and Northern Iran at the Caspian Sea. In the entire Mediterranean this species has become almost extinct for destruction of it's habitat. It makes showy small rose flowers above acer-like foliage and five seeded capsules. For any humus rich, well drained susbtrate in full sun. Not winter hardy in Central Europe, best grown in pots under frostfree conditions throughout the year. In winter keep drier at a minimum of some 5°C with lowered watering. USDA Climate Zone 9. V-VIII.
