Tagetes (Huacatay, Pericón & Yauthli)

Huacatay, Pericón or Yauthli are aromatic Marigolds with edible leaves which are used fresh in several traditional Mexican and South American dishes. All are easily grown annuals to shortly lived perennials with numerous small to medium sized, whitish-yellow to bright yellow flowers throughout summer. Apart from being edible, their roots emit a nematode reppellent substance as a natural insecticide. For any rich, well drained substrate in full sun throughout the year. Either grow as annuals or in pots with reduced watering in winter and a minimum of some 15°C.
Sow flat on any rich, well drained soil at some 20°C to 27°C throughout the year in full sun. Transplant to the garden at the end of spring as soon as night temperatures stay above 15°C or grow in pots.
