Hops are fast growing, woody perennial and herbaceous vines within the hemp family (Cannabaceae). They are native of the northern hemisphere and have ornamental, fingerlike, dark green foliage and axillary clusters of small flowers covered with large light green pseudo petals. In Humulus lupulus these cone-like, fruiting bodies are harvested from cultivated female plants and are most commonly used as a bitter flavoring agent in beer. All are easily grown in any humus rich, yet well drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Very easy and adoptable vines. Sow from autumn to late spring in any rather humus-sandy soil in a partially shaded spot. Keep pots in a sheltered and sunny spot outside during winter. Germinates in late spring to early summer. Transplant young plants after leaves fall in late autumn. All are USDA Climate Zone 6. 20 seeds per package. |
