Isotoma (Australian Harebell) & Hippobroma (White Star of Bethlehem)

Australian Harebells and White Star of Bethlehem are small genera of annual to perennial plants within the bellflower family (Campanulaceae). They are native of humus rich, slightly moist soils in open spots in subtropical woods or sunny spots in open grounds from India through New Zealand and Australia (Isotoma spp.), respectively Jamaica (monotypic genus Hippobroma). All are easily grown in any humus rich, well drained soil.
Sow dustilike seeds flat on top of any rich, well drained soil in pots in spring at some 20°C. Do not cover seeds with soil and keep moist from below. Transplant annual Isotoma spp. to the final spot in the open garden as soon as plants are strong enough after the last freezing nights. Grow the perennial Hippobroma longiflora in pots under frostfree conditions throughout the year. In winter keep plants slightly drier at a minimum of some 15°C and a sunny spot.
