Pinellia (Asian Mouseplants)

Mouseplants are close to Arisaema and grow in shaded and moist woods in East Asia. A very easy and good genus, completely hardy outside. Will easily naturalize by seeds and offsets. Berries will stay always green and contain only one seed each. Excellent wood plants for a peaty soil. Need sufficient moisture in spring and summer, drier in winter. Note: certain species may become invasive in cool temperate as well as subtropical climates for their seeds and/or leaf bulbils. We strongly recommend to cultivate the following species under controlled conditions in pots: Pinellia pedadisecta and all Pinellia ternata forms. Pinellia tripartita is less invasive, especially in cool temperate climates in can be grown in the open garden, however in subtropical regions a cultivation in pots is recommended as well. All forms of Pinella cordata multiply rather reluctantly by means of solitary leaf bulbils and for their naturally small tuber size they should be grown in pots to not get lost in the open soil in the garden.
Sow flat in any rich soil at a minimum of some 15°C throughout the year in a half-shaded place. As long as being in leaf, keep seedlings preferably in a sunny, cool yet frostfree spot in winter. Keep dormant corms of seedlings preferably in a cool, yet frostfree (at some 5°C to 10°C) and dry spot during their first winter, plant out into the garden in mid spring the following year.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
Price is given per package (20 seeds) or per dormant corm (length in cm or diameter in ø cm).

Dormant plants (i.e. tubers or corms) are usually available in our shop from September through May.

Note: All corms are available for a delivery within Europe only ! Seeds are shipped worldwide. For Non-European customers only: We do ship dormant tubers outside Europe, provided that all risk is upon the buyer. We do not issue any phytosanitary certificate, which is officially required for most countries. We kindly ask you to check with your local import regulations before placing an order!

40 (80)cm, Chinese Green Dragon is often confused with Arisaema dracontium (North American Green Dragon), but easily distinguished from the latter by green maturing berries. An easily grown Pinellia species for any rich, well drained soil in full sun to partial shade. It will readily offset and set seeds and will become invasive if not controlled. V-VIII.
