Phoenix (Date Palm)

Date Palm has been cultivated for thousands of years and probably originates in the area between Egypt and ancient Mesopotamia. It usually makes a single stem with large feathered leaves, but occassionally produces several stems from the same root system. Potted plants will probably not flower and set fruits. In a rather frostfree climate, such as the Mediterranean, plants will start to flower and fruit between 7 to 10 years after sowing. It is easily grown in any rich, fertile and well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter reduce watering and keep plants at a minimum of some 10°C. Older plants will tolerate temporarily slight freezing for a short period of time.
Sow seeds horizontally in any rich, well drained soil and keep substrate slightly moist but not wet. Store pots at some 25°C to 30°C. Seeds will germinate between 4 weeks and 3 months.
