Sisyrinchium or Blue-Eyed Grass and Olsynium are closely related genera within the iris family (Iridaceae) and are native of North and South America. They are perennial to short-lived dwarf plants with tiny, iris-like foliage and grow in moist to damp places in shade to full sun. They make small, but numerous flowers from spring to summer. In Olsynium flowers and seeds are usually larger than in Sisyrinchium. They are suited for any humus rich, leafy, well drained soil, which should stay slightly moist in summer and be kept drier in winter, if possible. Excellent for a partially shaded to sunny, protected spot in the rock garden. Will form nice, rich-flowering clumps in time. Most species from the Andes in South America are fully hardy to -15°C in the northern hemisphere (i.e. in Europe and most of the US) with some protective dry mulch layer in winter. Sow flat at minimum 5°C (preferably in spring) in any well drained, sandy and humus rich soil. Keep pots in a protected, partially shaded spot. Transplant rhizomes in late summer so that plants will be able to develop sufficient roots in autumn. All are USDA Climate Zone 7/8. 20 seeds per package for all Sisyrinchium species, respectively 10 seeds per package for all Olsynium species. |
