Trillium or Wakerobins is still being a rarely seen genus from moist and leafy woodlands of North America and East Asia and is close to the genus Paris. They have ornamental trilobed foliage, which is often speckled or striped white or brownish. The central flowers show a wide range in colores from white to yellow, lime-green, rose, brownish-red and purplish-red. All Trillium species are rhizomatous perennials and will grow well in slightly moist places in any soil on a peaty compost basis. They require a cool root run in summer and do not like to be disturbed. They need some time to establish and will form nice clumps in a couple of years. Sow seeds flat preferably in autumn in any sandy or some other well draining soil in pots outside in a protected spot. Seeds require a cooling period over several weeks prior germination in late spring. Some seeds might take two years to germinate. Thus do not discart pots with ungerminated seeds too early. Cultivate plants in pots for at least two years, transplant to the open garden after leaves have withered in late summer or early autumn. All are USDA Climate Zone 6. 10 seeds per package. |
