Spring Beauties are annuals to perennials from mostly humus rich sites in open spots in woods and grasslands in North America. Few species occur in Central America and northeastern Asia. Several species have showy pale rose to pink flowers above fresh green to bluish-green leaves. Woodland species grow well in any humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Claytonia megarhiza (Alpine Springbeauty) is an excellent plant for a well drained, rather rocky soil in a protected spot in the rock garden. Sow fine seeds in pots flat on any rich, very well drained soil at some 15°C in mid spring in a sunny spot. Do not cover seeds with soil. Carefully transplant young plants to the final spot in the garden as soon as they are strong enough and after the last freezing nights from late spring to early summer. All are USDA Climate Zone 6. 20 seeds per package. |
