Homolanthus (Bleeding Heart Spurge) & Euphorbia (Red Spurge)

Bleeding Heart Spurge and Mexican Red Spurge belong to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) and are ornamental tropical evergreen shrubs with colored foliage. As in all Euphorbiaceae plants will "bleed" a white latex sap if being injured. Care must be taken to avoid any direct contact with the skin or eyes as in several Euphorbiaceae species this sap is extremely irritating. The Samoan species Homolanthus nutans has been traditionally used by the island inhabitants to treat Hepatitis and recent scientific research has given evidence that a substance from the bark may act as a supporting treatment against HIV. Both species offered are ornamental plants for any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year. Keep plants slightly drier in winter at a minimum of some 15°C.
