Water Lilies belong to a genus of winterhardy to subtropical and tropical aquatic plants with a cosmopolitan distribution. Most species make tubers or thick rhizomes from which emerge floating glossy leaves and colorful floating flowers. Smaller tropical species are easily grown in large pots or small containers filled with 1/2 soil and 1/2 water. Tropical species require a minimum of some 20°C throughout the year and full sun and are showy plants which are excellent in a heated greenhouse or wintergarden. During summer they can also be moved outside. Certain species are summer green and winter dormant. During dormancy their rhizomes can be stored in soil covered with water and without light in a cool spot at some 10°C. Sow fine seeds on any humus rich soil and do not cover seeds. Carefully add some 5cm of water on top of the soil. Keep pots at some 20°C to 30°C in a sunny spot. Most Nymphaea species will germinate very fast in less than a week. The first leaves are tiny and will gradually get larger. Carefully transplant tubers or rhizomes to larger pots as seedlings get larger. Plants are very fast growing and will make their first flowers within 1 year after sowing in the smaller species! 20 seeds per package. |
Nymphaea caerulea (Sacred Blue Waterlily)30 (50)cm, Sacred Blue Water Lily (syn. Nymphaea nouchalii var. caerulea), also erroneously called "Blue Lotus of the Nile", is a medium sized species with floating glossy leaves with entire margins and typical small brownish dots and streaks on the lower side, and showy pale blue, slightly fragrant flowers. Nymphaea caerulea is native of swampy and freshwater areas in Eastern Africa. The true and unhybridized species is rather rare in cultivation, and at the same time much asked for. What you will mostly be offered under this name is in reality Nymphaea capensis, Nymphaea colorata or some hybrid. You will find thousands of these misidentified pseudo caerulea being offered on the web, be it as dried flowers and petals, plants or seeds. A basic Google image search will return more than 90% misidentifed plants. True Nymphaea caerulea always has pure yellow stamens, with only the tip being very light blue, petals are always light blue fading to pure white at the base, and not bluish violet degrading to yellow as they do in Nymphaea colorata. Sepals and partly the lower petals have distinct greenish strikes towards the base. There is an excellent video on YouTube how to easily distinguish a true Nymphaea caerulea from fake ones. Just search for "Blue Water Lily Identification | Nymphaea caerulea". Our seeds are from the real species, see photo from one of our mother plants. Easily grown in large pots or small containers filled with 1/2 soil and 1/2 water at a minimum of some 20°C throughout the year and full sun. Nymphaea caerulea seedlings are very fast growing and under optimal conditions it will take only 3 to 4 months for the first flowers to appear. Thus you can also grow this plant as an annual, if you are living in a colder area and cannot keep plants during winter. VI-XI. |

Nymphaea colorata (Blue Nile Water Lily)40 (60)cm, Blue Nile Water Lily is a medium sized species with floating glossy leaves and showy, fragrant flowers, which open rich bluish violet, to more rarely light violet blue (or even pure white), and later turn to a slightly paler color from the second day onwards. Nymphaea colorata is native of swampy areas alongside the Nile river in Egypt and neighboring areas in East Africa. Plants, seeds and especially dried petals from this species are being offered as Nymphaea caerulea by uncountable fraudulent sellers on the web. Nymphaea colorata is easily grown in large pots or small containers filled with 1/2 soil and 1/2 water at a minimum of some 20°C throughout the year and full sun. It can either be propagated by seeds (which may lead to various violet flower shades) or by means of tiny offset tubers taken from the mother plant in late spring. VI-XI. |

Nymphaea pubescens has floating glossy leaves and spectacular flowers hold on a stalk above water level. Flowers are pure white in the true species. Certain rose flowering populations are regarded to be of hybrid origin or may be a new undescribed species. Easily grown in large containers with a water level of some 40 cm to 100 cm above soil. In cooler areas plants are seasonally dormant in winter, when their more or less leafless rhizomes can be stored under water at a minimum of some 12°C. Our seeds are from the true to type white flowering species and originally came from Kerala, India. Seeds will germinate rapidly in some 3 to 5 days at a water temperature of around 25°C. V-IX. |
