Dracontium or South American Titan Arum is a small genus with some 25 species which are native from Central America to South America. They usually develop a single deeply dissected, umbrella-like leaf on a medium sized to very tall stalk and a flattend tuber with several tubercles on top. The spatha is maroon-brown in most species. All are easily grown in any rich, well drained substrate in a partially shaded (summer) to sunny (winter) spot. Keep plants always warm at a minimum of some 20°C throughout the year, decrease watering to a minimum as soon as plants go dormant. Plant tubercles horizontally and flat in any humus rich, well drained soil. Keep soil always slightly moist and pots at some 20° to 30°C in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Tubercles will usually need one entire year in most Dracontium species before the first leaf appears. Thus be patient. Sow seeds flat in any humus rich, well drained soil. Keep soil always slightly moist and pots at some 25°C to 30°C in a sunny spot. Germination is erradic and very slow (!) in all Dracontium species and may need some 6 to 18 months, sometimes it will take even more. Thus do not discart pots with ungerminated seeds too early. As long as the seed is still firm and not mushy, this means that it is still viable and will germinate at a later point. Growing Dracontium from seeds is definitely something for very patient plant people only. 1 (one) seed per package. |
