Madagascar Palms or Madagascar Bottle Trees are native of Madagascar and South Africa. These ornamental plants can be divided into two basic groups: tree-like species with a massive succulent stem and dwarf species with a broad and short caudex. Especially the tree-like species have usually very long, elegant leaves in a compact crown on an upright stem densely covered with long thorns, such as Pachypodium lamerei and Pachypodium geayi. Older specimens (rarely in potted plants) are adorned with large, bright colored, strongly fragrant flowers. These are easily cultivated in any rich, well drained, preferably stony or rocky soil in full sun throughout the year. Keep older plants rather dry in winter at a winter minimum of some 12°C. Sow flat in any rich, rather inorganic soil at a minimum of some 20°C in full sun. Young seedlings are best grown at higher temperatures with careful watering and full sun in winter. 10 seeds per package. |
Pachypodium geayi (Madagascar Palm)2 (8)m, Madagascar Palm makes a most ornamental, strongly succulent, metallic green stem covered with ornamental, numerous spines topped by a crown of semiperennial, very long and narrow, grayish green leaves with a light pink midrib under sunny conditions. Mature specimens start to form lax branches with several pure white, strongly fragrant flowers. Easily grown in any rich, well drained, preferably stony soil in full sun throughout the year. Keep drier in winter at a minimum of some 12°C. If plants are kept absolutely dry in winter they enter dormancy and shed almost all leaves. |
