Pycnospatha

Pycnospatha is a small genus from the border region of East Central Thailand and Cambodia. At present this genus includes only two recognized species: Pycnospatha arietina and Pycnospatha palmata. They are medium sized plants with a single or few leaves each growing season, unlike in the related genus Amorphophallus the leaflets are conjoined. Makes an unusual, dark burgundy-brown spathe with a nodding tip. Easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot in summer. As soon as the leaf starts to yellow (usually in autumn), keep dormant corms absolutely dry at a minimum of some 10°C. Place corms in a warmer spot with beginning of spring and carefully start to water again as soon as the new leaf appears from the center of the corm.
Price is given per package (3 seeds) or per dormant corm (size in ø cm).

Dormant plants (i.e. tubers or corms) are available in our shop from October through May.

Pycnospatha palmata

20cm, an extremely rare species in cultivation as well as in habitat, where it is native in a very restricted area in Thailand. It makes a basal brownish red spathe with a nodding tip, hiding a short spadix inside. It has palmately divided leaves. For any humus rich, very well drained susbtrate in a sunny spot. In winter keep dormant corms completely dry at a minimum of some 15°C. VI-VII.
