Kirengeshoma or Waxbell is made up of only three species which all are rare and much sought after decorative plants from higher elevations in Korea to Japan. Easy in any leafy, and moist soil in partial shade where rhizomes will gradually increase to form large clumps in time and produce their showy, large bell-shaped, yellow wax-flowers on huge erect stalks from late summer to autumn. Sow paper-like seeds flat in a rather peaty soil from autumn to early spring. Keep pots outside in a sheltered spot. Pot-cultivation for two years, transplant rhizomes in early spring. All are USDA Climate Zone 6. 20 seeds per package. |
Kirengeshoma koreana (Korean Waxbell)100 (140)cm, the rare Korean Waxbell is native of moist woods in Northern Korea. It is similar to Kirengeshoma palmata from Japan, yet it has more upright and taller stems, with slightly pendulous or upwards facing flowers which appear earlier in late summer. For any humus rich, slightly moist soil in partial shade. VIII-IX. |
