40 (80)cm, Tree Jockey is native of Zululand, South Africa where this species is threatened by extinction due to habitat loss. It is an semi evergreen to deciduous small shrub with leathery, glossy deep green leaves and showy coral-red tubular flowers which are born with the new leaves in spring. This species supposedly produces edible fruits when fully ripe, however, we strongly discourage eating them, as this species belongs to a family (Scrophulariaceae) with mostly toxic plants. In habitat Dermatobotrys saundersii usually grows as an epiphyte. However, it can be easily cultivated in pots in any very well drained soil in a partially shaded (summer) to sunny (winter) spot. If plants go dormant in late autumn or during winter and shed most or all leaves, reduce watering to a minimum. II-V. |
