Paeonia brownii (Brown's Peony)

80 (100)cm, Brown's Peony is a very rare Californian native Peony, and one out of only two ancient relict species native of the US. It has dark green, broadly dissected foliage and compact wine-red flower buds with greenish-yellow eadged petals. For an very well drained, preferably rocky soil in full sun. Paeonia brownii requires some shelter from winter wetness. Excellent in a protected spot in the rock garden. Paeonia brownii is the most difficult species to germinate. Some seeds make first roots in the first year and then develop the first leaf in their second year.
