150 (180)cm, this species was once regarded as a variety of the extremely variable Canna indica, however, based on DNA analysis in 2011, it is now accepted as a taxonomically distinct and valid species of its own. Some seed merchants offer it under the illegitimate name Canna speciosa. It makes broad, yellowish green banana-like leaves and numerous flowers with orange-red upper petals and yellow lower lips with red spots. Seeds in Canna patens are perfectly round, black and with a distinctively glossy shine. Easily grown in any rich, humus rich soil in a sunny spot in summer. In winter keep dormant rhizomes drier and at a minimum of some 5°C. VII-IX. |
