Indian Rhododendron (Melastoma spp.) are evergreen shrubs native from India to Asia and Australia. They have leathery leaves and bright rose to pale lilac flowers. Glory Bushes (Tibouchina spp.) are a broad genus of most ornamental evergreen shrubs from the Neotropics with usually dark green, hairy leaves and large bright lilac flowers in summer. Melastoma and Tibouchina can be grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year and a winter minimum not below 20°C. For their tropical origin these plants are very cold sensitive and with lower temperatures they will shed most leaves. Sow dustlike seeds on top of any rich, well drained substrate. Do not cover seeds with soil and keep pots in a partially shaded spot at between 25°C to 30°C. Germination occurs in one to two weeks. Seedlings are tiny in their first weeks and any disturbance shall be avoided so that they can develop well. 50 seeds per package. |
