Moraea are iris-like plants from South Africa with long, broad lanceolate and usually evergreen to semi evergreen leaves with similar, large flowers as real iris. Hardy in a sheltered place in the rockery garden in full sun to half-shade with a good mulch layer as protection against freezing through. After heavy freezing plants will resprout in late spring, excellent pot plants for an unheated wintergarden or greenhouse. All Moraea should be given some extra drainage in order to keep rhizomes rather dry in winter. Will flower freely if happy. Sow seeds flat at some 15°C to 20°C in any well drained, yet humus rich substrate. Keep pots in a sunny spot and keep soil slightly moist from below. Most species will require a prolonged cooling period prior to germination and a drop down to 10°C at night may significantly enhance the germination process. Germination will either occur in autumn for wintergreen species or in late spring for summer growing members. Do not expose sowing pots neither to freezing temperatures nor to more than 30°C. All are best sown in an unheated, yet frostfree wintergarden or greenhouse. All are USDA Climate Zone 8 unless stated differently. 20 seeds per package. |
