Fresh leaves and young shoots of all Silene vulgaris subspecies are edible and have been historically used either fresh in saldas or cooked as a vegetable in the Mediterranean region. Nowadays only on Cyprus leaves are still collected in larger amounts and locally sold, and usually added to omlets or served as a cooked vegetable.
