Ají, Chili, Green Pepper, Habanero, Jalapeño, and Rocoto all belong to a single genus (Capsicum) which is native of tropical regions in the Americas. Capsicum species are annuals to short lived perennials or woody sub-shrubs and have been cultivated for centuries for their spicy fruits. In most species fruits contain a chemical substance (capsaicin), which causes a burning sensation in the mouth and other mucosal tissues, less so on intact skin. There have been several attempts to define spiciness in these cultivars and varieties, yet even fruits from one and the same cultivar may contain a different amount of capsaicin, as it not only depends on genes but also on growing conditions. Thus some fruits may show a slight spiciness only and serve to add some hot flavor to dishes, whereas others from the very same cultivar may contain a level of capsaicin which is too high für human consumption. Thus we do not give any information on supposed spiciness for any cultivar. We strictly sell all Capsicum cultivars as ornamental plants only! Any use for human consumption is upon the risk of the buyer! All Capsicum cultivars are easily grown in any humus rich, slightly moist soil in full and at a minimum of some 20°C (optimal 27°C). In colder regions these plants should be grown under glass in a greenhouse to set fruits, for plants do not endure prolonged cool and/or rainy periods. Cultivars from Capsicum annuum, Capsicum baccatum and Capsicum frutescens will usually fruit in the same year of sowing (if started early in the year). Cultivars of Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum, Capsicum chinense, Capsicum praetermissum, and Capsicum pubescens, as well as most wild species are best grown as biannuals or perennials, for they mostly set fruits in their second year after sowing. Sow seeds flat in any well drained, humus-rich soil. Keep soil slightly moist and pots at some 25°C. Germination will start in two to four weeks. Seeds from Capsicum pubescens cultivars (e.g. Rocoto chilis) will naturally take longer, the same applies to several wild Capsicum species. Thus do not discart pots with ungerminated seeds too early. Seedlings are mostly fast growing, provided sufficient warmth and light, especially during winter months. Why can we offer seeds at an all-time low price? Read the answer here. Minimum 10 seeds per package. Note: Seeds from Capsicum spp. and cultivars can be shipped within the EU and to Canada only! Australian customers only: seeds from the following species and their cultivars are allowed entry to Australia: Capsicum baccatum, Capsicum frutescens, and Capsicum praetermissimum. All other species and their cultivars cannot be shipped. UK customers only: since 1 Jan 2022 Capsicum seeds cannot be shipped to the United Kingdom anymore. U.S. customers only: seeds cannot be shipped to the U.S. |
