On these pages you find the worldwide by far broadest offer of seeds from endemic plants of the Canary Islands of Spain (Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro), the Azores and Madeira (both Portugal), the Cape Verde Islands
offshore Westafrica, the Balearic Islands of Spain (Ibiza, Menorca and Mallorca) and Sardinia and Sicily (both Italy) in the western Mediterranean, Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean, and the island of Socotra in the Golf of Yemen offshore the northeastern tip of Africa. Most plants native of these islands are more or less summer dormant and winter green. They are ideal plants for a pot or container cultivation, as they endure quite cool temperatures in winter in a sunny spot and excellently suit a frostfree greenhouse, a cool wintergarden and the smaller species even on a sunny windowsill. Numerous species occurring on these islands (island endemics) are characterized by an only very small-scale spreading and usually only small populations consisting of very few individuals. Thus some species are restricted in nature to a particular mountain, a steep ravine, or even to only few square meters of a cliff with a certain geographical orientation. The occurrences particularly of these only locally growing species are highly endangered in their existence due to the lasting and partially irreversible change of their habitats by human activities (e. g. construction of roads and houses, logging, as well as arson) and savaged livestock (especially goats), so that several species have already become extinct. Do help to conserve this particular flora, which has developed undisturbed by humans over millions of years, by not leaving the paths on your mountain walks, not leaving any garbage in nature, as well as not negligently disposing any cigarettes. The best protection of these plants is the conservation of their local habitats (in situ). In culture (ex situ), e.g. in botanic gardens or in private cultures, these plants can be kept alive medium-term over few generations only. A selection of endemic plants from these islands can be viewed in various botanic gardens, e.g. on Gran Canaria (Jardín Botánico "Viera y Clavijo" in Tafira Alta in the north-west of the capital Las Palmas de GC), on Madeira (Jardim Botânico da Madeira in the north-west of the capital Funchal), as well as on Mallorca (Jardí Botànic de Sóller on the western base of the Tramuntana mountain ridge). Legal note: In accordance with national German laws (BNatSchG and BArtSchV) as well as European (Bern Convention) and international conventions (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora - CITES) we do not sell any wild collected material such as seeds from protected plants. Seeds from protected plants exclusively derive from horticulturally artificially propagated plants in Germany respectively Lebanon only, where plants have been taken into cultivation in the late 70ies and early 80ies of the last century. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
