Micromeria (Mountain Thyme)

Mountain Thymes are mostly strongly scented semi-woody herbs and close to real thyme (Thymus spp.). Several species are used as seasoning in Mediterranean dishes or for the extraction of essential oils. Most species have small and narrow leaves and small white to rose flowers. Micromeria is a very complex genus and several species are very look-alike and difficult to identify. For any well drained, rather inorganic substrate in full sun throughout the year. Some species are sufficiently winterhardy, these are marked below with USDA climate zone 6. Plant winterhardy Micromeria species in any rich, well drained soil in a protected and sunny spot. All other not frostresistant species from the Mediterranean and the Canary islands should be kept frostfree and always very sunny at a minimum of some 5°C in winter with careful watering.
Sow tiny, almost dust like seeds on any well drained substrate at some 20°C throughout the year. Do not cover seeds with soil. Keep pots in a sunny spot and water only irregularly from beneath.
