Helicodiceros (Dead Horse Arum)

Dead Horse Arum is a monotypic genus close to Dracunculus (Dragon Aroid) with only this species, Helicodiceros muscivorus, an increasingly rare native of few western islands in the Mediterranean Sea (Corsica, Sardinia and the Balearics [Menorca, Mallorca]). It is growing in rock crevices in cliffs and steep slopes in the vicinity of the sea. Makes very unusual, unforgettable "parfumed", horizontally hold flowers which may gain up to 30cm in length.
Grow plants in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. During dormancy keep tubers almost completely dry and do not start to water regularly before the new leaves are visible, which is usually betweenn late summer or mid autumn. A summer dormant and wintergreen species, which is best grown under frostfree conditions in pots. Only in very mild climatic regions it can be grown in a protected spot in the garden in Central Europe. Alternatively it can be successfully grown in a cool, unheated greenhouse with very mild and only occasional freezing during its growing period in winter.

30 (75)cm, Dead Horse Arum has a horizontally hold inflorescence, the spathe is pale green outside and inside shaded dull red, the typical black spadix shows long "hairs". Nicely divided, fresh green to dark green leaves. For any humus rich, yet very well drained soil in a sunny spot. Wintergreen and not sufficiently hardy to be grown outside in Central Europe and North America. Best for pot cultivation in a sunny spot in a cool, yet almost frostfree greenhouse or wintergarden. Keep plants completely dry during dormancy in summer, as soon as new leaves are formed in autumn, keep plants slightly moist. 5.0cm ø sized corms are flowering size. 2.0cm ø large corms will need another year to reach flowering size. IV-VI.
