Pittosporum (Mock Orange)

Mock Oranges are evergreen woody shrubs to small trees native of subtropical and tropical regions throughout Asia and Australia, a single relict species is native of the island of Madeira (Portugal). All have glossy, leathery dark green leaves and terminal clusters of strongly fragrant flowers followed by fruits with decorative bright colored seeds embedded in an oily and sticky substance. All species are easily cultivated as showy container plants in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep drier at a minimum of some 10°C .
Sow in any rich, well drained soil at a minimum of some 20°C throughout the year. Keep soil always slightly moist and pots in full sun.
All are USDA Climate Zone 9 .

It is supposely a rare species, but several populations in the southern part of the island have been overlooked in the past, thus it is restricted, but locally very common. However, on the Canary islands it is extinct. It has leathery, glossy, dark green, oblong oval leaves and terminal clusters of whitish-cream, slightly fragrant flowers followed by round yellowish fruits containing small orange seeds embedded in an oily, sticky substance. Easily grown as a container plant in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep drier at a minimum of some 12°C. V-VIII.
