Sambucus (Macaronesian Elderberry)

Canary and Madeira Elderberry with edible, bluish-black fruits, growing on open locations in the laurel forest. Both species have become extremely rare and are threatened with extinction. May grow to almost tree size, yet they can easily be cut back in spring before new leaves emerge to keep them at a manageable container plant size. For any humus rich, always slightly moist soil in a partially shaded spot. Keep drier in winter, will shed some leaves.
Sow seeds very flat in a humus rich and sandy soil at some 10-25°C, keep soil always moist and in partial shade.
All are USDA Climate Zone 10.

2 (4)m, Madeira Elderberry is a rare and threatened species with large, feathered, plain glossy leaves and white umbels of small whitish flowers followed by deliciously sweet and juicy, glossy black fruits in late summer on older plants. Native to humus rich soils in open spots in the laurel forest on Madeira, with few remaining wild specimens in nature. Keep frostfree and cooler in winter at some 5-15°C, in a sunny spot. Reduce watering. An ornamental, evergreen container plant for a slightly heated greenhouse or cold wintergarden. USDA Climate Zone 10. IV-V.
