Rosa (Canary Wild Rose)

Roses are a very broad genus with several hundred of species usually found in temperate regions throughout the world. On the Canary islands one endemic form of the common Dogrose (Rosa canina f.) grows in open spots in the Laurel forest and at slightly lower elevations in the Fayal-Brezal zone. It makes a tall lax shrub with creamy white to light yellow, scented flowers followed by bright orange-red fruits in late autumn and winter. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Fully winter hardy in a sheltered spot in Central Europe.
Sow seeds flat in any rich, preferably slightly sandy soil. Keep pots cool, best in a protected spot outside during winter or inside in a cool place at a maximum of some 10°C. Seeds germinate in late spring with rising temperatures.
All are USDA Climate Zone 8.
