Wintercherry or locally called Orobal are native of the Canary Islands, the Mediterranean and the Arabian region. They are wintergreen and usually summer dormant woody shrub with large oval, sometimes undulated leaves and axillary yellowish-cream flowers, which are followed by fruits made up of a slightly inflated, green calyx and a bright orange "eye", i.e. the orange berry inside. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Keep cooler, yet frostfree in winter at a minimum of some 15°C, water carefully as long as plants are in leaf. During summer irrigate sporadically so that the soil never dries out completely. Sow flat on any rich, well drained soil. Especially in winter keep seedlings very sunny. Note: As for most members within the Nightshade family (Solanaceae) all parts are poisonous if ingested 10 seeds per package. |

In India it is widely used in traditional Ayurveda medicine as an antibiotic and a narcotic. The small inconspicuous yellowish green flowers are followed by ornamental glossy, bright orange berries (poisonous) partially embedded in a green calyx. For any rich, well drained, slightly sandy to stony soil in full sun throughout the year. In winter keep cooler at a minimum of some 10°C with reduced watering. VII-X. |
