Rues are herbaceous perennials native of rocky, sunny sites in temperate regions in the northern hemisphere. They have strongly aromatic, dissected, bluish-green foliage and terminal umbels of greenish-yellow to pale yellow flowers. For any rich, very well drained soil in full sun. Sow seeds flat in any rich, well drained soil and keep pots outside in a protected spot. Seeds require a prolonged cooling period prior to germination in late spring. Carefully transplant young plants to the final spot in the garden as soon as they are strong enough. Important note: All Ruta species (as well as many other species within the genus Rutaceae, such as Citrus spp. and Dictamnus spp.) may cause severe phototoxic skin reactions. Never touch plants without gloves and if you do so accidentally, thoroughly rinse affected areas with water and do not expose your skin to direct sun light for several days. Especially flowers and green seed buds, but also leaves produce chemicals, which are not harmful themselves, but a later exposure to sun light will cause very irritating and long lasting chemical skin burnings! Again, be warned in handling these plants with unprotected skin - we have made some unplesant experiences ourselves! Ruta species shall not be planted in gardens with children and/or animals. All are USDA Climate Zone 6. 20 seeds per package. |
