Teucrium (Winter Hardy Germander)

Gamander is a broad genus from Eurasia and the Mediterranean. They are either dwarf ground covering perennials of small woody shrubs. Several species are cultivated for their ornamental flowers or for their aromatic leaves. They are easily cultivated in any rich, well drained, preferably slightly rocky soil in full sun. Excellent in the rock garden. All species offered on this page are non-invasive.
Sow seeds flat in any rich, well drained, rocky or sandy soil. Do not cover seeds with soil. Keep pots in full sun in a protected spot outside. Transplant as soon as seedlings are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.

30 (50)cm, Cat Thyme is a short, woody, evergreen perennial with narrow, greyish green, strongly aromatic leaves. Crushed leaves exude a pepper like smell. To humans this may be cautiously described as being irritant, yet as its name suggests, cats apparently love it. It makes numerous lilac flowers in summer. Native of rocky mountain sites in the Mediterranean. Easily cultivated in any rich, well drained soil in a protected spot in full sun. It is native of rocky mountain sites throughout the Mediterranean and the Middle East. In the Middle East it has been long used in traditional medicine, yet more recent studies showed a liver and kidney toxicity.
