Gunnera (Mammoth Leaf)

Mammoth Leaf or Giant Rhubarb is a small diverse genus of evergreen to herbaceous perenials from Hawaaii, South America and New Zealand. Some Gunnera species make impressively large and broad leaves (up to 2 meters in the largest member, Gunnera manicata). Though being of subtropical to tropical origin, some species are frost resistant and can be successfully cultivated in the garden in colder regions, provided that their rootsystem is given a very good winter protection (e.g. a very thick dry mulch layer). For any humus rich, always slightly moist soil in partial shade to full sun in a preferably protected spot.
Sow fine seeds on top of any humus rich, well drained soil at some 20°C throughout the year in a sunny (winter) to partially shaded (summer) spot. Do not cover seeds with soil and keep soil always moist from beneath. Seedlings are best grown in pots under frostfree conditions for at least four to five years. In winter keep young, dormant plants slightly drier at a minimum of some 5°C. Transplant rootstock to the final spot in the garden by the end of spring.
All are USDA Climate Zone 8/9.
