Swamp Mallows (Hibiscus spp.) and Saltmarsh Mallow (Kosteletzkya virginica) produce annual shoots from a perennial rootstock and are native of moist spots in bogs and marshlands in northern America, respectively from southern-east to central America and Cuba (only Kosteletzkya). They require plenty of water in summer and are best cultivated in shallow water at the edge of a pond, where they will unfold willingly their large, tropical flowers from mid summer through early autumn. All Swamp Mallows belong to a very small Hibiscus section, namely section Muenchhusia, which contains some 5 to 7 species only and which are all endemic to North America: Hibiscus coccineus, Hibiscus dasycalyx, Hibiscus grandiflorus, Hibiscus laevis, Hibiscus lasiocarpus (syn. Hibiscus moscheutos ssp. lasiocarpus), Hibiscus lasiocarpus var. occidentalis (syn. Hibiscus moscheutos ssp. lasiocarpus var. occidentalis), Hibiscus moscheutos und Hibiscus palustris (syn. Hibiscus moscheutos ssp. palustris). The relation of a look-alike species (Hibiscus ponticus) from the state of Georgia in Asia Minor is still unresolved. Sow flat in spring at some 20°C in any humus rich, moist soil in a sunny spot. Transplant as soon as seedlings are strong enough. Give dormant rootstock in winter some protection from freezing through (e.g. mulch layer). All are USDA Climate Zone 7. 20 seeds per package, unless stated differently. You find more hibiscus in these categories: Hibiscus (Hardy Mallow), Hibiscus (Tropical Hibiscus) & Pavonia and Tropical Hibiscus Hybrids. Hibiscus grandiflorus (Giant Swamp Mallow)200 (300)cm, Giant Swamp Mallow is an eye-catching, yet still rarely cultivated perennial herbaceous shrub from wet areas in south-eastern USA (Florida). It makes very tall annual stalks with very large, always pale rose flowers, which is the typical and only color in this species. Additionally, petals are narrower than in any other North American swamp mallow species. Leaves are palmately-divided, greyish-green, and smoothly pubescent. The annual stalks usually die down in winter and the plant re-sprouts in following spring. For any very humus rich, always slightly moist soil in full sun. During winter cover the dormant rootstock with a mulch-layer to give some additional protection from freezing through. Seeds or plants in the garden trade are mostly either Hibiscus moscheutos or some hybrid with an atypical flower color and form. Our seeds are from true-to-type plants. VII-IX. |

Hibiscus palustris (Swamp Rose-Mallow)170 (220)cm, Swamp Rose-Mallow (syn. Hibiscus moscheutos ssp. palustris) is a herbaceous perennial with several erect stems covered with light green leaves. In contrast to the closely related Hibiscus moscheutos, Hibiscus palustris has always rich pink flower cups. It is native of marshes and alongside wetlands in northeastern North America. Reports from supposedly wild populations in southwestern Europe all refer to garden escapes, and are as a matter of fact escaped populations from Hibiscus moscheutos and not Hibiscus palustris. None of the species in Hibiscus section Muenchhusia is native of Europe, but their distributional area is strictly confined to the New World. For any humus rich, well drained, always slightly moist soil or at the edge of a pond or stream in a sunny spot. VII-IX. |

Kosteletzkya virginica (Virginia Saltmarsh Mallow)100 (150)cm, Virginia Saltmarsh Mallow is a herbaceous perennial with an erect, widely branching stem with hastate, finely pubescent leaves, and numerous medium sized bright rose flowers from late summer to early autumn. Kosteletzkya virginica is native of marshes and alongside wetlands from southern-east North America to Central America and Cuba. Some authors place Kosteletzkya virginica into Kosteletzkya pentacarpos from the Mediterranean region. Yet due to their extremely disjunct distribution and lack of genetic analysis, we keep this species separately. For any humus rich, well drained, always slightly moist soil or at the edge of a pond or stream in a sunny spot. Our mother plants have been grown from material which originally came from Florida, USA. VI-IX. |
