Sage (Salvia spp., including former genus Rosmarinus) is a very diverse genus with numerous annual, biannual to perennial, hardy as well as subtropical and tropical, herbaceous or woody species. Many sage species are highly appreciated ornamental plants, whilst others show nicely fragrant leaves and are used as herbs in the cookery or for oil extraction on the perfume industry. Thus a general description cannot be given and details on habit and cultivation are given for each species in the section below. Bluecurls (Trichostema spp.) is a small genus of aromatic plants from North America and somewhat similar in apperance to sage species. They are easily grown in any rich, very well drained soil in full sun. In colder areas preferably grow in a protected spot or as pot plants under frostfree conditions throughout the year and a winter minimum of some 5°C. Sow flat in any well drained soil at some 20°C throughout the year in a sunny spot. Keep soil always slightly moist. Transplant hardy or annual species to the garden at the end of spring or as soon as seedlings are strong enough. Keep perennial subtropical and tropical plants (e.g. those from the Canary Islands) in a sunny spot with reduced watering at minimum 10°C. USDA Climate Zone see below. 20 seeds per package, unless stated differently. |
