Schinus or False Pepper Trees are tall shrubs to large trees native to Latin and S America. All have most ornamental, feathered leaves with a strong, pepper-like fragrance and make clusters of small yellowish flowers followed by bright colored red to rose berries, which have a pepper-like taste and are used in the cookery as decorative addition to real pepper seeds (Piper spec.). Easily cultivated pot plants for any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Keep drier in winter at a minimum of some 15°C in a sunny spot. Set fruits even as young, some four year old plants in pots. Sow throughout the year in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot at a minimum of some 20°C. Note: The berries shall not be consumed excessively, as they contain several toxic substances, which are harmful in higher concentrations to the human body. A couple of berries are sufficient to add color and flavor to many meat dishes or salads. 20 seeds per package. |
