Bog Primroses belong to three closely related genera Liparophyllum, Ornduffia and Villarsia within the Gentian family (Gentianaceae, formerly known as a family of its own: Menyanthaceae). There is still some confusion in this group and hence species have been moved back and forth from one genus to the other, resulting in numerous synonyms. Most species are native of Australia, a handful of species are endemic to South Africa, respectively to South-East Asia. They are mostly suberect to prostrate herbaceous to evergreen perennials with glossy oval leaves and showy, lax inflorescences with usually yellow or more rarely white flowers, some with fringed petals. They are native of permanently to occasionally wet, marshy spots or areas of flat waters. For any humus rich, always moist soil. All are excellent, fast growing plants for the border of a pond. Most Liparophyllum, Ornduffia and Villarsia species are not reliably winterhardy. In mid autumn, and before the fist frosts, plant their somewhat fleshy roostock in pots and keep pots in a sunny spot in a cool and frostfree spot during winter at a minimum of some 10°C. Sow the very fine seeds on top any any rich, always wet soil at some 20°C throughout the year. Do not cover seeds with soil. Carefully transplant to the final spot as soon as plants are strong enough and after the last freezing nights. All are USDA Climate Zone 9/10. 20 seeds per package. |
