Telopea (Waratah)

Waratah is a small genus of five species only from Australia and Tasmania. They are evergreen, small to medium-sized woody shrubs within the silvertree family (Proteaceae). They have dark green, leathery leaves and utmost showy, bright colored red to violet-red terminal flower heads. All make good pot plants in any fertile, humus rich, slightly sandy to rocky, almost lime-free soil in a sunny spot throughout the year with a winter minimum of some 10°C and reduced watering. Sow seeds flat in any preferably anorganic substrate soil (crushed lava, pumice, etc.) at some 15°C to 20°C. A temperature drop at night will usually enhance the germination process. Keep pots always slightly moist from beneath and sunny until germination starts, then water more infrequently. All are of USDA climate zone 11. 7 seeds per package. |
