Matilija Poppy is a monotypic genus with a single perennial species native of rocky, sunny spots in western USA. It bears utmost beautiful, very large pure white flowers above serrated bluish-green leaves in summer. For any rich, very well drained soil in a protected spot in full sun. Excellent in the rock garden. In colder areas some protective dry mulch layer should be given around the base and a shelter from winter wetness should be provided. Sow seeds flat in any rich, well drained soil and keep pots outside in a protected spot. Seeds require a prolonged cooling period prior to germination in late spring. Carefully transplant young plants to the final spot in the garden as soon as they are strong enough. All are USDA Climate Zone 7. 20 seeds per package. |
