Golden Chain Tree is a small genus consisting of only two species (Laburnum anagyroides and Laburnum alpinum) from Central to Southern Europe. Both are tall woody shrubs to small trees with dark green trifoliate leaves and most ornamental, numerous golden yellow flowers arranged in pendulous panicles in spring. They are easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. They are drought resistant and very adaptable to various cultivation conditions. Specimens which are getting to tall can be cut back after flowering. Note: All parts are poisenous if ingested. Prior to sowing scarify seed (e.g. carefully scratch the seed coat with fine sandpaper) and soak them in luke warm water for some 48h. Sow flat in any well drained, rather sandy soil in full sun. Keep pots outside and transplant in autumn as soon as plants are strong enough. All are USDA Climate Zone 6. 20 seeds per package. |
Laburnum alpinum (Alpine Golden Chain Tree)2 (4)m, Alpine Golden Chain Tree is native of mountainous sites in SouthCentral Europe. Has a more compact habit than the second species. Makes dark green trifoliate leaves and showy bright golden flowers in pendulous panicles in mid spring. Easily cultivated in any well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. IV. |
