Mountain Hollyhock or Globemallows are annuals, perennial or woody shrubs mostly native of North America with few species occurring in South America. All make upright racemes densely covered with showy cup-shaped flowers above usually acer-like leaves. Easily cultivated in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot.
Checker Mallows are usually herbaceous perennials native of open spots in semi-moist woods, meadows and alongside streams in North America. All make upright racemes densely covered with showy flowers above usually acer-like leaves. Easily cultivated in any humus rich, well drained, always slightly moist soil in a sunny spot.
Sow flat in any rich, well drained soil. Keep pots in a sunny, protected spot outside. Transplant as soon as seedlings are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
