Tradescantia (Spiderwort)

Spiderworts belong to a diverse genus including winterhardy as well as tropical species. Winterhardy Tradescantia species are found in humus-rich soils in prairies and open spots in woods in North America, whereas tropical members inhabit open spots in woods in Central and South America. In general the spiderwort family (Commelinaceae) is made up of rather tropical or subtropical species, however several species from the northern hemisphere are hardy semi-perennials or perennials with a dormant rootstock in winter. They are fast growing in spring and make numerous sky-blue to deep blue two-petaled flowers throughout summer. Winterhardy species are easily grown in any humus-rich, well drained soil in a partially shaded to sunny, protected spot in the garden in Central Europe. Some additional winter protection for the dormant rootstock may be recommendable in colder regions. Tropical species require a minimum of some 15°C and a sunny spot in winter.
Sow flat at some 20°C throughout the year in any leafy and sandy, well drained soil. Keep seedlings always sunny. Plant out winterhardy species after the last freezing nights towards the end of spring.
All winterhardy Tradescantia species are USDA Climate Zone 6.
