Dolichos (Hyacinth Bean)

Hyacinth Bean is an annual to biannual climbing vine from the Old World tropics. It has ornamental, large, trifoliate leaves and axillary racemes of quite large, fragrant, pale purple to rose bean-flowers, followed by maroon-red, flattened seed-pods. It is widely grown in India and throughout the Arabian region for its lush foliage and nice flowers as well as for its edible black beans.
Sow in any rich, well drained soil in spring. Keep pots in full sun and transplant to the open garden in a humus-rich soil in a protected, sunny spot after the last freezing nights in late spring to early summer. Best cultivated in a large pot or container in a greenhouse or wintergarden, where the flowers develop freely.
