Bastard Balm belongs to a monotypic genus with only this European species which occurs in humus rich, slightly moist soils in open spots in woods. It is a herbaceous perennial with several uright stalks with bicolored, white and rose flowers in whorls in spring. Easily grown in any rich, well drain soil in a partially shaded to sunny spot. Sow seeds flat in any rich, well drained soil. Keep pots outside in a protected spot and transplant to the garden as soon as seedlings are strong enough.
