Chinese Dates are tall deciduous woody shrubs to small tree from the western Mediterranean and north-western Africa to East Asia. Most species are half-hardy fruit trees with small, greenish-yellow flowers followed by date-sized fruits turning brownish-red with maturity. These have a typical, refreshing white flesh. They are excellent plants for a sunny spot in a humus rich, well drained soil in the garden in mild regions. In colder climates cultivate in large pots, keep drier in winter at a minimum of some 5°C. Sow seeds in any rich, well drained soil in spring in pots outside. Cultivate seedlings in pots under preferably frostfree conditions in their first winter. Transplant to the final spot in spring as soon as plants are strong enough. All are USDA Climate Zone 8 unless otherwise specified. 7 seeds per package. |
