Japanese Orange Cherry is the only species in the monotypic genus Idesia and is native of humus rich soils in partially shaded to sunny spots in woods in S Japan and C and W China. It is a fully winter hardy, deciduous, medium-sized to tall tree with a round crown, light green, slightly pubescent heart shaped leaves, and some 30cm long pendulous racemes with fragrant yellowish-green flowers in spring followed by most ornamental bright orange-red berries in late summer and autumn. It is an adoptable species which is easily grown in any humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Sow the fine seeds flat in any humus-rich, well drained soil, slightly cover seeds with soil and keep pots in a protected, sunny spot outside during winter.
