Nandina (Heavenly Bamboo)

Heavenly Bamboo is a most ornamental, fully winter hardy, tropical looking, woody, deciduous shrubs native of woods throughout Japan, the Himalayas, China and northern India. Unlike its common name suggests, it is not a bamboo, but belongs to the Barberry family (Berberidaceae). It makes several small and branching trunks with ornamental, delicate, doubly-pinnate compound, bluish green leaves, which turn to bright red in late fall and winter. Its dense clusters of showy scarlet berries last till late winter. Easily grown in any humus-rich and well drained soil in full sun to partial shade.
Sow flat in any rather humus-rich, well drained soil. Keep pots in a sheltered and sunny spot outside in winter. Transplant young plants in late spring before the leaves emerge or in early autumn. Give young plants a good winter protection, e. g. a thick dry mulch layer.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
