Chorizema (Flame Pea) & Kennedia (Coral Pea)

Flame Peas and Coral Peas are related small genera which are all endemic to Australia. Chorizema (flame peas) are mostly small shrubs with upright hold to arching thin branches, whereas Kennedia (coral peas) are either perennial climbers or prostrate ground covering plants. Species in both genera have most ornamental, bright colored pea like flowers, which are usually bicolored in Chorizema. All Chorizema and Kennedia species are easily grown in any rich, well drained soil, preferably rather inorganic soil in a sunny spot. A climbing aid is recommendable for Kennedia. Most climbing species may gain several meters in a single growing season. In winter keep plants in full sun with somewhat reduced watering at a minimum of some 15°C. Ideal for a cool green house or wintergarden. All species can be cut back in early spring.
Prior to sowing carefully scarify seed (e.g. carefully scratch the seed coat with fine sandpaper) and soak them in luke warm water for some 48h. After that sow seeds flat at a minimum of 20°C throughout the year in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot.
