Tree Peonies or Shrub Peonies are easily raised from seeds, but they will need their time to establish and to gain flowering size, which may be in a minimum of some 3 to 4 years, depending on cultivation conditions and species. They are suited for any partially shaded to sunny spot in a well drained, yet humus-rich soil. Especially these shrub-like species have always been much sought after, but they are rarely offered and thus will stay rather high priced. Some treasure plants for the connoisseur! In recent years there has been much confusion on species within the genus and this is still true for herbaceous perennial members. At least things seem to be sorted out for shrublike woody peonies. Only 4 tree peonies with several varieties and forms remain in the genus Paeonia: Paeonia decomposita, Paeonia delavayi, Paeonia ostii and Paeonia rockii. Sow in any rich, well drained soil in autumn or early spring some 1cm/0.4" deep. Several seeds may not germinate before spring of the second year after sowing, thus do not empty pots with ungerminated seeds too early ! All Paeonia seeds require a prolonged cooling period for several months in winter before germination starts in early to mid spring. During winter place pots outside in a protected, sunny spot. The seedlings are best grown in pots for at least some 2 years, thereafter carefully transplant he young plants in early spring, paying special attention to not breaking their fleshy rhizomes. Once established, do not disturb plants until they are becoming too large. All are USDA Climate Zone 6. 3, respectively 7 seeds per package. Apart from tree or shrub peonies we offer several herbaceous peonies as well. |

Paeonia ostii (White Tree Peony)150 (180)cm, White Tree Peony is an erect growing woody shrub peony from Yunnan Province, China. This utmost beautiful, botanically valid species was newly described in the year 1992 in honor of Dr. Gian Lupo Osti, former president of the International Dendrological Society. This species is similar to Paeonia suffruticosa, yet its' dark green leaves have less segments and it forms large, pure white flower cups with a plesant sweet musk fragrance. For any well drained soil in a sunny spot. A still rather rare species. We were among the first nurseries worldwide to propagate this new species in the year 1999 and it has proven to be a very robust, easy going and free flowering peony which is easily raised from seed. A simply splendid peony! IV-V. |
