Salvia discolor (Black Peruvian Sage)

130 (160)cm, Black Peruvian Sage is an evergreen, woody, strongly aromatic shrub with a very local distribution in Peru, where it is very rare. It makes shiny green, sticky leaves which are white underneath and long and arching terminal racemes with violet-black flowers. The entire plants is aromatic and distinctively smells of blackcurrents. An excellent container plant which is easily cultivated in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep plants slightly drier and at a minimum of some 20°C in full sun. For most growers, Salvia discolor seems to be sterile and will not set seeds, hence it is usually propagated by the means of cuttings. Our plants have proved to be fertile, yet they will only set seeds after some heat wave in mid summer with temperatures ranging between 25°C to 30°C during daytime. Also, seeds seem to require overall higher temperatures (~ 25°C) in comparison to most other Salvia species in order to germinate. I-XII.
