Helleborus niger ssp. niger (Christmas Rose)

15 (20)cm, Christmas Rose is an evergreen perennial with broad glossy green, fingerlike, serrated, leathery leaves and large white flowers fading to pale rose with age from mid winter to early spring. Native of open spots in woods and meadows in the Alps through Slovenia, Croatia and northern Italy. Easily cultivated in any humus rich, well drained soil in partial shade to full sun. Do not disturb the very long-lived plants once established. I-III.
